Chapter 8

1. European Union. Go to the web site of the European Union. Write a short paper on the structure (institutions) of the EU, including the Parliament, the Commission, the Court of Justice, and the Central Bank.

2. NAFTA. Go to the web site of the Foreign Trade Information System (SICE) [p] to view the contents of NAFTA. Read through Part One: General Part and Part Two: Trade in Goods. Write a paper that summarizes the goals of NAFTA and the various policies regarding trade (from Part Two).

3. APEC. Go to the web site of APEC. Read up on news and events surrounding APEC. Write a two-page paper summarizing what APEC is doing today.

4. WTO. Go to the World Trade Organization web site. You will find 2 documents: “10 benefits of the WTO trading system” and “10 common misunderstandings about the WTO”. Read these documents and answer the following questions: 1) Do you support the efforts of the WTO? Why or why not? 2) Why should a country want to join the WTO? 3) What does it take for a country to be accepted into the WTO? 4) Should China be admitted to the WTO? Why or why not?

5. Cross-Cultural Training. Browse the Internet for different cross-cultural training packages that are for sale. Select five good packages and provide a summary of what the training encompasses for each. Would you buy any of these packages for your company’s training program? Why or why not?
