Internet ExercisesChapter 161. Communication Style Quiz. Go to www.siu.edu/offices/counsel/talk.htm and take the quiz on communication style. Are you passive, assertive, or aggressive? Read up on your style and summarize in a one-page paper. In addition, discuss how your style might relate to work and school activities. 2. Coaching. Go to The Coaching & Mentoring Network web site and read about one of the case studies about how coaching and mentoring helped particular individuals. Summarize the findings of the case and how it demonstrates good one-on-one communication. 3. Communication Articles. Go to your library’s web site. Using the periodical indexes, search for an article about “listening” or “providing feedback”. Summarize the article in a one-page paper. Be sure to include your own thoughts or insights about the topics and whether you agree or disagree with what the article has to say. 4. Cross-Cultural Communication. Go to www.executiveplanet.com to view various aspects about doing business with other countries. Select one country and research how communication styles may differ from that of your own country. Write a two-page paper highlighting your findings. (Hint: You may not find an exact link called “communication” and will have to read all the different sections, such as negotiating, to find information about communication. Since communication pervades many aspects of doing business in that culture, you can find relevant items in each area.) 5. Corporate Communication. Go into the web site of any well-known company and evaluate its external communication on the following attributes: 1) How user-friendly is the web site? 2) What kinds of information are communicated? 3) Does the web site allow people to email or communicate with corporate officers? 4) How “open” and honest is the company regarding information, especially negative information? and 5) How would you rate the web site overall on its communication (on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being excellent). Send an email (if this feature is available) and see how long it takes for you to get a response. |
